Your Digital Paper includes handwriting recognition fields that convert handwritten input into searchable, editable text. Choosing the correct handwriting language ensures optimal accuracy and functionality across these tools.
Why handwriting language matters
The handwriting recognition system works best when aligned with the language you primarily write in.

There are designated fields on the device that enable handwriting recognition input and are marked with the above icon. Moreover, the selected handwriting recognition language also applies to the Convert to text feature.
These fields include:
- Search
- Naming fields for files and folders
- Share email
- Search inside PDF and books
- Adding comments in PDFs
- Adding notes in Books
- Convert to text
Note: The accuracy of recognition depends on the legibility of your handwriting. Automatic spell-check is included to improve output, but clarity and consistency in writing style remain important.
Setting up a handwriting language
Initially, you are asked to select a handwriting language during onboarding, which can later be adapted from the settings of your Digital Paper.
Choosing a handwriting language during onboarding
During the initial setup, you'll be prompted to select your handwriting language. This is separate from the interface language and should reflect the language you most often write in.
Your device may pre-select a suggestion based on your region or language settings, but you can always change this using the dropdown menu before continuing.
Tip: This step is essential for enabling accurate conversion features later on.
Changing handwriting language in settings
To adjust your handwriting language after onboarding:
- Go to Settings > General > Language and region
- Tap Handwriting recognition language
- Select your preferred language from the list
Only one handwriting language can be active at a time. If you often write in multiple languages, you can update your selection as needed in settings.
Note: For best results, make sure the selected language matches the language you are writing in. If the selected handwriting language does not match what you write, the system may not have been able to interpret your input correctly.
