Using your Digital Pen: Pair, charge & interact

Your Digital Pen is designed to integrate seamlessly with your Digital Paper. It connects automatically, charges magnetically, and includes customizable features to enhance your writing and navigation experience.

Overview

The Digital Pen supports writing, navigation, and advanced interactions through:

  • Automatic pairing via NFC and Bluetooth
  • Wireless charging
  • Three customizable buttons
  • Optional haptic feedback
  • Intelligent sleep mode for battery preservation

Whether you're sketching ideas or navigating files, the pen adapts to your needs with precision and personalization.

Pairing and charging

To connect and charge your pen,  attach it to the magnetic dock on the left side of the device. The pen pairs automatically via NFC and Bluetooth.

  • The screen will confirm the charging status
  • If Bluetooth pairing is successful, you'll see the battery percentage
  • If only NFC is connected, pairing continues in the background, and the device will notify you once complete

Note: Your pen must be connected via both NFC and Bluetooth to access settings and customization features.

When not in use, you can place the pen on the right side of the device. It will rest magnetically, but will not charge or pair from that position.

Tip: After 10 minutes of inactivity, the pen enters sleep mode. Tap it to wake it or return it to the charging dock.

Writing experience and screen behavior

The Digital Pen is designed to give you a natural, paper-like writing experience — smooth, precise, and customizable to your preferences.

Your device comes with three interchangeable pen tips, each offering a slightly different feel on the screen:

  1. Smooth: The smooth tip provides an exquisite writing experience, akin to gliding a pen over an impeccably smooth paper. It ensures a soft yet responsive touch, making each stroke fluid and natural.
  2. Linen: The linen texture adds a tactile dimension to your writing, making each stroke feel substantial and deliberate. It offers gentle resistance, enhancing control and precision.
  3. Matte: Writing with the Matte tip feels like using a pen on premium matte paper. The tip provides tactile feedback that is both swift and controlled.

You can try each tip to see which one best matches your writing style. Tips can be replaced at any time, and replacements are available separately.

Digital Pen tip markings
Inside the stem of the tip, you can find an indicator of the type of tip. For Linen (attached to the pen by default), no color is visible. For Smooth, you can notice a small blue marking, and for Matte, a small red marking on the tip.

Understanding screen refresh

Because the Digital Paper uses e-ink technology, light traces of previous marks may remain visible even after erasing. This is known as ghosting, and it’s a regular part of how e-ink displays work.

To maintain a clear workspace and optimize visual clarity:

  • Use the top button on the pen (press and hold for 2 seconds) to quickly refresh the screen
  • Tap the refresh icon in the control center from the Home Screen

Tip: Refreshing regularly helps preserve your focus and keeps your notes clean, especially during longer writing or drawing sessions.

Pen buttons and customization

Your Digital Pen features three programmable buttons:

  • Top button (rear of the pen)
  • Upper tool switch
  • Lower tool switch

Each button supports actions such as navigating to the Home screen, creating a quick note, toggling tools (eraser, highlighter, and pen types), refreshing the screen, and more.

Buttons are disabled by default, but can be enabled and personalized within settings:
  1. Go to Settings > Pen
  1. Select the button you wish to customize
  1. Toggle it on from the provided checkbox
  1. Choose from available actions

Note: Each action can only be assigned to one button at a time.

Haptic feedback

Subtle vibrations provide tactile confirmation during specific actions. They enable you to receive signals from the device, such as confirming your actions or warning you of errors.

You can turn this feature on or off in Settings > Digital Pen.

Troubleshooting pairing issues

If your pen is charging but not showing a battery percentage:

  • Only NFC may be connected — Bluetooth may still be pairing in the background

If Bluetooth fails to connect:

  • Go to Settings > Pen
  • Simply dock your pen in the leather notch and wait for the connection
  • Once paired, button settings and battery percentage will become visible

Note: You must restart your Digital Paper to enable your Digital Pen to be fully functional after pairing successfully.

Unpairing your pen

To disconnect your pen:

  • Go to Settings > Pen
  • Tap “Unpair Digital Pen”
  • Confirm the action in the pop-up

The pen will still work for writing, but won’t support advanced functions until it is re-paired.

To re-pair: simply attach it to the left dock again.
