Your Montblanc Digital Pen is designed with three buttons that make navigating and writing on your Digital Paper more efficient. Since the display is optimized to resemble real paper (and therefore less responsive than typical screens), these buttons provide helpful shortcuts.
The three buttons are:
- Top button (at the crown of the pen)
- Upper tool switch (side button, nearer to the top)
- Lower tool switch (side button, nearer to the tip)
By default, the Upper and Lower tool switches are switched off and must be enabled in Settings before you can use or customize them.
The top button supports three customizable actions:
- Single tap: Go to the Home Screen or wake up the device
- Double-tap: Create a Quick Note, even when locked (password required for further access)
- Tap & hold: Refresh the screen to reduce ghosting (with optional vibration if haptics are enabled)
Tip: Refresh your screen regularly for a smoother writing experience.

These buttons are designed for efficient writing. They only work when inside a document (Notebook, PDF, or eBook) and when the pen is close to the device.
- Upper tool switch (default: off): When enabled, undo last action is selected automatically.
- Lower tool switch (default: off): When enabled, toggle between your current writing tool, and the Eraser is selected automatically.
Note: The lower tool switch works best when the pen is positioned very close to the screen and is mainly intended for professional writing.

You can tailor the buttons to your workflow in:
Settings → Pen → Digital Pen customization
Step 1: Open the control customization menu
- Tap the Settings icon on your Digital Paper
- Navigate to Pen
- Here, you will see the section Digital Pen customization
Step 2: Select the button to customize
You’ll see all three buttons (Top, Upper switch, Lower switch) listed. Tap on one to edit its behavior.
Step 3: Assign actions
Each button offers different levels of flexibility:
The top button supports three input types:
- Single tap → Go home / wake up, or disable
- Double tap → Create a Quick note, turn page, expand/collapse toolbar, or disable
- Long press → Refresh screen, or disable
Upper and Lower tool switches both offer the same options, allowing you to assign one action to each switch:
- Undo
- Redo
- Add comment/note
- Toggle between the current writing tool and a chosen tool (Eraser, Highlighter, Fountain pen, Ballpoint, Fineliner, Pencil, Calligraphy pen)
Step 4: Save & test
Once you select an action, it is active immediately. Try using it within a Notebook, Quick note, PDF, or eBook to confirm it works as expected.
Important rules
- Each action can only be assigned once (e.g., if Undo is set to the Upper switch, it can’t also be set to the Lower switch).
- Tool switches work only inside documents—not on the home screen or in menus.
- The Lower switch requires the pen to be very close to the device for reliable input.
With these customization options, you can set up your Digital Pen to suit your writing style—whether you want fast access to Undo/Redo, a quick way to refresh the page, or an instant switch between your favorite writing tools.
